ADVANCED FOUNDATIONS IN APPLIED NEUROSCIENCE

A12-week advanced, intensive program, dedicated to the Neuroscience of Transformation, Unlearning, and Difficult Change.

Not all change is created equal...Some changes are more difficult than others.

This is an advanced program. It is designed to equip experienced coaches and change facilitators with advanced neuroscience know-how to support transformation when developing awareness and insight is not enough.

It focuses on the scientific building blocks of transformation and threads the Top 10 Neuroscience-based models into this framework, to give you specific, applicable tools and techniques.

Program Outline: Building Blocks of Transformation

This program is advanced because it is specifically designed for gaining a neuroscience foundation of:

  • Engaging the Transformation Systems in the brain.

  • Creating sustainable change.

  • Identifying and managing resistance.

  • Facilitating shifts in thinking and emotional patterns.

  • Decoding the Unlearning-relearning process.

  • Developing Neuroscience-based Change-Readiness Skills.

  • Mastering the Neuroscience of accountability.

Neuroscience of transformation

How can we support transformation when change is difficult? How can we use neuroscience to go beyond developing insight and awareness to facilitate actual change adoption?

This excellent, cutting-edge, small group program focuses on the intersection of Neuroscience & Difficult Change and is not right for everyone. It is unique in scope, depth, and complexity. It:

  • Combines critical Neuroscience research with application: There is a lot to learn about the brain but not all of it is relevant for transformation work. You'll learn in-depth about brain parts and systems which support transformation (like the Hippocampus, Amygdala, BNST, Insula, and Anterior Cingulate Cortex, just to name a few). You'll learn HOW to use this scientific knowledge to support transformation in a clear, applicable, and concise way.

  • Covers more than just one or two models: Difficult change is complex and different models are needed to support different aspects of difficult change.

  • Is highly application-oriented: Designed for coaches and change facilitators who want to support their clients to move the needle or make a difference.

  • Focuses on coaching first: From a Neuroscience perspective all change starts with individuals in mind. While KCI offers additional program levels (for team development and organizational change), an in-depth understanding of transformation at the individual level is always a prerequisite.

  • Based on a kind and compassionate approach: At the same time, it is highly growth-focused which means being comfortable with the discomfort required to hold people accountable.

  • Adds new techniques to your toolkit: Since this program is designed for experienced coaches and change facilitators, it focuses on getting beyond awareness (by engaging the transformation systems in the brain) and on how to guide people through the most difficult aspects of change and transformation.

  • Positions you as an expert: Supplementing your rich knowledge and experience with an enhanced ability to support change and make tremendously positive impact (by knowing how to best align your coaching and change facilitation with the way the brain works).

Please note: This program may challenge some of your assumptions about coaching and change facilitation. While we will draw on your rich experience and knowledge, the learning will require open exploration and curiosity, and cohort members are often asked to have deep levels reflection and vulnerability.

Why Is This Program Considered Advanced?

You may find it interesting to know that the field of applied neuroscience offers three main types of programs:

  • Descriptive: Sharing the science itself in describing how things work in the brain.

  • Traditional: Providing neuroscience findings in support of traditional coaching and change facilitation models.

  • Advanced: Using new scientific findings to supplement traditional models. The main focus of advanced programs in applied neuroscience is to ask "how do we use new scientific research to support transformation?"

All three types of programs are much needed. If possible, as coaches and change facilitators it is probably wise to have mastery of at least one model from each type (while this program provides a foundations of all three types it is much more heavily focused on advanced applications).

Would I Benefit From An Advanced Program?

Are you a certified coach or change facilitator? Do you have mastery of several models and methodologies? Do you enjoy learning, refining, and expanding your expertise?

In many cases, your cohort will include coaches and change facilitators who already have other relevant certifications, sufficient experience, and/or relevant advanced degrees and expertise. Most cohort members are:

  • Experienced coaches and change facilitators (often with relevant higher degrees or certified by ICF, CTI, CCE, ACMP, and similar organizations).

  • Already familiar with traditional coaching and change models and are interested in supplementing their existing knowledge with the Neuroscience of Transformation (focusing on difficult change, going beyond awareness, and how to get people to adopt change in a sustainable way).

  • May or may not have background in neuroscience. Although prior neuroscience knowledge is always great and many past cohort members have completed other neuroscience-related programs (some even have higher degrees in neuroscience), there is absolutely no need for any prior knowledge about the brain in order to join this program. The program will provide you with everything you need to know about the way the brain works (in the specific context of change adoption and transformation): starting from the most basic knowledge all the way to the most in depth relevant research.

Compare: 3 Types of Neuroscience-Based Programs

Generally speaking, you may find 3 types of Neuroscience-based coaching and change facilitation programs (all are highly valuable and great to have in your toolkit!): descriptive, traditional, and advanced. Of these three types, KCI's Foundations in Applied Neuroscience is an advanced program (although it does cover some descriptive materials):

compare programs in applied neuroscience for coaches

When comparing an Advanced program in Applied Neuroscience with other types of neuroscience-based programs, you can expect this program to focus on:

  • Engaging the Limbic Brain (Traditional Neuroscience-based programs will focus more heavily on building awareness and engaging the Prefrontal Cortex).

  • An in-depth understanding of overcoming a wide range of less effective response patterns to discomfort.

  • Understanding the stages of the Unlearning-Relearning process (with clearly defined stages, the obstacles between stages, and how to overcome obstacles).

  • Focusing heavily on difficult change (how to support people who are less motivated, less reflective, and less engaged, or people who are highly invested but still struggling to adopt change in a sustainable way).

Certificate of Completion

This is a hige-value program. It is comprehensive and intensive and it focuses on providing you with the most advanced knowledge about neuroscience-based models, techniques, and tools.

While cohort members often have prior neuroscience knowledge (some may have completed other neuroscience-based programs and in some cases have advanced degrees in neuroscience), no neuroscience background is required and it is in no way a disadvantage to join without such background!

Satisfactory completion of this program will award you with a Certificate of Advanced Foundations in Applied Neuroscience. However, it is worth noting that while this program is highly application-oriented, it is not a certification program in the sense that you will not be coached or mentored to use models and techniques. It can be taken as a stand-alone or alternatively, can be followed by a 10-month practicum to complete an Advanced Certification in Applied Neuroscience, based on your individual preferences (click here to learn about KCI's practicum-based certification program).
